The Papers of James Madison, Presidential Series: Volume 9, 19 February 1815-12 October 1815 (Book)
Title: The Papers of James Madison, Presidential Series: Volume 9, 19 February 1815-12 October 1815
Author: James Madison
Editor: Angela Kreider
Editor: Anne Mandeville Colony
Editor: Mary Parke Johnson
Abstract: This volume covers a busy time in the presidential years. Madison was directing the U.S. government's transition from war to peace after the Treaty of Ghent, striving for better relations with the British while the situation remained tense and uneasy. A brief war with Algiers, problems with General Andrew Jackson, Napoleon's return and the the French Restoration, as well as the nation's financial issues related to a lack of a national currency occupied his time. The slow rebuilding of a fire-damaged Washington after the war of 1812 made conditions difficult for all those working on government affairs in the capital city.
