Digital Bilingual (Portuguese/English) Edition of Correio de Africa [Africa Mail] Newspaper with Scholarly Apparatus (Database/Archive/Digital Edition)
Title: Digital Bilingual (Portuguese/English) Edition of Correio de Africa [Africa Mail] Newspaper with Scholarly Apparatus
Author: Zita Cristina Nunes
Abstract: This project is an open access digital bilingual edition of the Correio de Africa [The Africa Mail], a pan-Africanist newspaper published in Lisbon between 1921-1924, supplemented by a robust scholarly apparatus. Its comparative and multilingual approach generates new perspectives on the interconnectedness of colonialism, imperialism, literary and cultural history, politics, labor, migration, environmentalism, race and racism, linguistics, journalism, photography and advertising, women’s activism, and transnationalism; The digital format presents high-quality scans of the original newspaper pages, enhanced by a tool that hovers over the original Portuguese text to provide the English translation. The inclusion of a scholarly apparatus that is accessible through embedded notes and links is calculated to be unobtrusive, as well as informative and educational at every level of interest and expertise. The interface is adaptable to mobile as well as computer screens.
